Week 1: It's everywhere!


 GOAL: TO LEARN GERMAN

Hello! I’m Adriana, and I want you to join me on this crazy journey of learning German and getting pumped to actually study it in 2026. To kick things off and hype myself up, here’s something amazing I just learned: German is EVERYWHERE! From Einstein to Nietzsche, it has shaped not only science and philosophy, but also incredible literature and powerful poetry. The language itself is rich, expressive, and honestly beautiful. Oh, and don’t get me started on German cinema! From classic films to bold modern storytelling, German is a language that speaks through both pages and screens.

So this is week 1 of me trying to motivate myself to learn it next year, and you’ll be my partner on this adventure.

 Why German Sounds “Harsh”… and why that’s a Myth This week I learned something that completely changed the way I think about how German  sounds . You’ve probably heard the stereotype:  “German is such an aggressive language!” People imagine every sentence being shouted, full of sharp consonants and dramatic throat noises. But here’s the truth:  German isn’t harsh at all. We’ve just been trained to think it is. Why German words feel like Lego blocks. Hello! Welcome back, today i'll explain why German words often feel like   Lego blocks   because the language loves to build long, new meanings by connecting smaller words together. Instead of creating completely new vocabulary, German simply   clicks   existing pieces together to form bigger ideas, and it's just like snapping Lego pieces to build something new.  1. German uses  compound words A compound word is when  two or more words combine to make one . For example: Hand  (hand) +  Schuh  (shoe) →  Handschuh  (glove) Kühlschrank  →  cool + cupboard = refrigerator Every part keeps its meaning, just like Lego pieces keep their shape.  2. You can build very specific meanings English might need a whole phrase, but German builds one big word.
