Week 4: Why is Everything Capitalized in German?
Hello, hello, hello !!!
So, this week I learned something that made me stop mid-sentence while reading an article about German language.
They capitalize ALL nouns. Literally. Every. Single. One.
Not just names or places like in English. I'm talking about words like dog, weather, idea, friendship, carrot... all getting a capital letter as if they’re VIPs or something.
For example:
Der Hund (the dog)
Das Wetter (the weather)
Die Freundschaft (the friendship)
It looks a little strange at first, almost like every sentence is yelling random words. But honestly? It’s kind of genius. It makes it easier to spot the important parts of a sentence, and now I’m weirdly into it.
Like: Ah yes, the mighty Carrot has entered the sentence.
It’s also one of those details that makes German look super intimidating for the rest of the world.
So yeah, my small but fascinating German discovery of the week: nouns are royalty, and they get the capital treatment they deserve.
I almost forgot, here’s the link to the article I mentioned, in case you want to read it or you're feeling curious today. Let’s see what else surprises me next week. Click to read the article
Bis bald! (See you soon!)
